Pathomechanism of Candida infection in denture stomatitis

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2008, Vol 61, Issue 12

Abstract

Introduction: Denture stomatitis pertains to a number of pathological symptoms in the oral cavity caused by wearing acrylic dentures. This inflammation is induced by trauma, denture plaque and also Candida infection. Aim of the study: To discuss pathomechanism of fungal infection in denture stomatitis, especially mediated by the Candida biofilm formation. Conclusion: Nowadays, controlling biofilm associated fungal infections in patients wearing removable acrylic dentures is becoming a greater and greater challenge. This is particularly true in view of increasing antibiotic overuse and emergence of fungal resistance.
