Pattern of Acute Poisoning Presenting at a Tertiary Care Hospital

Abstract
Abstract: Acute poisoningis a medical emergency. It is important to know the nature, severity and outcome of acute poisoning cases in order to take up appropriate planning, prevention and management techniques. This studyaimed to assess the pattern and outcome of acute poisoning cases in a tertiary care hospital in Karnataka. This is a retrospectivehospital record-basedwhichstudyincluded 120 cases. Data on Sociodemographicdetails, type of poisoning, outcome, circumstances of poisoning (suicidal/accidental) and treatmentgivenwerecollected in the prestructuredproforma. Poisoningwas more commonamong males (61.67%) compared to females (38.33). Most cases of acute poisoningpresentedamong 21- to 30-year age group (51.7%). A majority of poisoning cases (32.5%) were due to organophosphorus compound (OPC). Total mortalitywasfound to be 12.5%. Poisoningis more common in young males. The overallmortalityismainlycontributed by self-poisoningwith insecticides and corrosives. Early care in a tertiary care center may help to reducemortality in India.
