Abstract

HIV/AIDS remains one of the world's most significant public health challenges, particularly in low and middle-income countries but the developed country also facing problem due to re mergence of infectious diseases as opportunistic infections. There was a need to study the pattern of opportunistic infections for the prevention of them. Aim: To study the pattern of opportunistic infections among HIV/AIDS patients visiting a rural teaching hospital of Maharashtra. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2013 to April 2014 at an A.R.T. centre of a rural teaching hospital situated in Maharashtra state of India. Interview of 385 HIV positive, on ART individuals was taken by using pre-designed, pretested questionnaire. Results: Although tuberculosis is more common opportunistic infection among the HIV patients, herpes zoster was the commonest opportunistic infection in the study area. The mean age of the HIV-herpes zoster co-infection was 40.23±8.32 years. Mean CD4 count HIV- Herpes zoster co-infected patient at the initiation of ART was 151.39±94.49cells/µl as compare to 154.46±90.84cells/µl in HIV only patients. At the time of interview the mean CD4 count of HIV-and HIV mono-infected had herpes zoster. Majority of the respondents (46.75%) were at 3rd stage of disease. Conclusion: The opportunistic infections were associated with higher age and lower CD4 count. Early diagnosis and regular follow up is necessary to start the ART earlier which help to prevent the opportunistic infections.
