Pelvic Hydatid Cyst: An unusual cause of refractory urinary retention in a young adult : A Case Report
Journal Title: JOURNAL OF MEDICAL COLLEGE CHANDIGARH - Year 2017, Vol 7, Issue 2
Abstract
Primary pelvic hydatid cyst is a rare clinical entity, usually presents as non-specific mass with pressure effects on to adjacent organs. We present an unusual case of large pelvic hydatid cyst which presented with refractory acute urinary retention. After a course of four week of antihelminthic drugs (Albendazole), the patient underwent removal of hydatid cyst through lower midline abdominal incision. In the postoperative, the patient failed trial without catheter after appropriate time period and he was started on alpha-blocker (Tamsulosine-0.4mg X 1HS) medical therapy. However, he again failed to void at one week and three-week of medical treatment using alpha-blocker drugs. Finally, the patient underwent transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) before he could void a good stream of urine. During follow up, after six-months, there has been no recurrence of either his symptoms or hydatid cyst.
