PERCEPTION OF PERSONS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES IN MAINSTREAM TEACHERS AND STUDENTS IN POLAND AND LITHUANIA

Abstract

The article discusses the phenomenon of intellectual disability, namely, that it is per-ceived differently and presented in different terms by mainstream teachers and students in Poland and Lithuania. The article presents and analyzes the findings of research conducted on 200 respondents as part of a master’s thesis. They show that the level of social awareness concerning this issue and the view of persons with intellectual disabilities are different in both countries. One of the reasons for such findings is the lack of contact with individuals with intellectual disabilities among respondents from Lithuania. The research findings in-dicate that Polish teachers and students in the study have more contact with persons with intellectual disabilities, which influences their positive opinion on autonomy and their pre-senting intellectual disability in terms other than just otherness and pathology.
