Abstract
The article studies the English nicknames formation based on sound similarity using such means as alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia. The use of alliteration is made to improve the emotional intonation and expressiveness of the nominations. Encoding the object in rhyme, its nominator selects an attribute or a group of attributes and then gives them more original reinterpretation. Secondary nomination reality in rhyming nicknames often is realized through the use of metaphors.
