Performance Study of a New High Instantaneous Power Impulse Converter With Switched Capacitor Unit

Journal Title: Power Electronics and Drives - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: There is a large number and many different types converters in power electronics. There is a group of impulse converters and there is High Instantaneous Power Impulse Converter (HIPIC) among them. It is widely used in industry, e.g. in Marx Generators or Crockcroft-Walton generators. Material and methods: HIPIC generates very short impulses (hundreds of microseconds) of instantaneous power in megawatt range while the average power is much lower (tens of kilowatts). The presented topology is composed of step-down converters, an H-bridge converter and a switched capacitor that allows to obtain a square wave shape. Results: Proposed topology with a new control algorithm has been examined. The performance of all three the units of the converter with every transistor switching are explained. It is taken into account rising and falling slopes as far as peak current control in the impulse. Conclusions: The new topology allows to work with very dynamic conditions. The impulse shape is close to very close to a square wave what results better process stability.
