Perilous effect of leucocytospermia on seminal parameters

Journal Title: MedPulse -International Medical Journal - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction: The human semen besides containing spermatozoa also contains some other cellular entities i.e., Nonspermatozoal cells (NSC) in semen, including immature germ cells, leucocytes (WBC) and epithelial cells, are normally found in a concentration less than 15% of the sperm concentration. Leucocytes are predominant among them. The leucocytes confer antibacterial and scavenging activity to the semen. The semen should, under normal physiological condition, contain less than 1 million leucocytes per ml of semen sample. The condition with leucocyte number exceeding this is called as leucocytospermia. Aims and objectives: To study the Perilous effect of leucocytospermia on routine seminal parameters like sperm count, motility, morphology of the sperm and their viability. Material and methods: The present study was conducted in the Semenology laboratory of department of Physiology, Government Medical College, Nagpur. The study involved 79 subjects with complaint of infertility referred from various Departments of Government Medical College and hospital, Nagpur. These subjects were grouped into three study groups according to leucocytes count in semen. While performing the semen analysis special emphasis was given on total sperm count, motile sperm count, percent normal morphology and percent viability. The subject included were in the age group of 21 to 40 yrs, they were all non smokers, non- alcoholics and free of any obvious genital tract abnormalities. The findings of routine seminal parameters were compared with the three groups of patients formed according to leucocytes count. Results: Mean total sperm count in group I, II and III was 80.55± 16.82, 50.72 ± 18.09 and 17.92±7.25. When the motile sperm count was compared in the three study groups I,II and III respectively, it also showed a declining trend from group I towards group III. In group I, The mean percentage of normal morphology was higher (59.72±4.00) as compared to Group II & III (42.81 ± 3.36 and23.10±7.69 respectively). The value of percent viability was found to be lowest in Group III, while it was highest in Group I. the difference observed in all the three groups was statistically significant. Conclusion: Thus we conclude that Leucocytospermia is one of the important determinants in the routine semen parameters.
