PERSONAL TEMPORAL ORIENTATION TYPES

Abstract

Abstract. The mechanism of temporal decentrations was theoretically analyzed through the lens of the moment of the psychological present as the time reference point. A classification of personal temporal orientation types is proposed. In the course of the empirical test, three temporal orientation personal types were individuated: transpective, perspective, and retrospective. The determinant of the personal temporal orientation was specified: the duration of the time unit (tau2type). The connection of the personal temporal orientation with the feeling of personal comfort/discomfort, the tempo rhythm, the dynamics, the organization, and life process was demonstrated. The temporal decentration formation mechanism was demonstrated, depending on the personality individual predisposition to one or another temporal orientation, that enables the transition from one temporal orientation to another, when the most comfortable one dominates, which provides an opportunity to the subject to use adaptive forms of goal setting and goal achievement. The psychological portraits of an average subject with a designated class of temporal orientation were built. In case of the perspective temporal organization, the personality integratesself2organization with the life organization on the basis of the perspective vision; exercises the internal control of the optimal method of life organization on the basis of the immediate, intermediate and long2 term goals; feels the need to perceive speed, tension, intensity, and fullness of life. In case of the transpective organization, the personality reflects on the temporal context of life based on the present, in case of a through2vision of the past and the future; tends to put all the events to order. In case of the retrospective type, the personality integrates self2 organization with the life organization on the basis of the past life experience, aims at the spiritual and intellectual completeness of events and is not likely to make attempts at organizing the time passage or steering its course. Prefers passive waiting to real action.
