Pharmacognostic Standardization and HPTLC Analysis of the Roots of Aerva ambigua/Aerva leucura

Journal Title: Journal of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

Morphoanatomy of the roots of Aerva leucura plant has been studied with the aim to aid pharmacognostic, phytochemical analysis by using WHO recommended physico-chemical determinations and authentic phytochemical procedures. Standardization parameters like macroscopic and microscopic examination, physico-chemical parameters and fluorescence profile of extracts of roots of A. leucura were performed. A number of flavonol glycosides and phenolic compounds have been reported in literature from different aerva species as major phytoconstituents and the minor constituents are betacyanins, sterols and carbohydrates. HPTLC profile studies presented in this paper may be used to check the authenticity of A. leucura and can possibly help to differentiate the drug from its other species.
