Pheochromocytoma Crisis Induced by Antenatal Glucocorticoids in Undiagnosed Men 2A - A Case Report
Journal Title: Indian Obstetrics & Gynaecology - Year 2016, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
Pheochromocytoma crisis is a rare but life threatening endocrine emergency that can be unmasked by triggers like use of antenatal corticosteroids that provoke release of catecholamine by clinically in apparent adrenal tumors. We report a case of a young pregnant woman with pheochromocytoma multisystem crisis which was most likely triggered by use of antenatal glucocorticoids in preterm managements. She had preterm birth, but recovered from crisis. She was diagnosed as a case of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2A (MEN 2A) for which she underwent necessary treatment. Subsequently she had successful pregnancy outcome. Exogenous glucocorticoids may unpredictably trigger pheochromocytoma crisis. In pregnancy, pheochromocytoma should always be included in differential diagnosis of any patients who develops hypertensive crisis, cardiac failure, tachycardia, headache and abdominal or chest pain after receiving exogenous glucocorticoids.
