Photography in orthodontics: trends and current standards

Abstract
Introduction. Since the beginning of photography and dentistry, both fields have had a significant mutual impact, with developments in one field creating opportunities in the other. Due to this mutual relationship, photography has benefited from new technical solutions in optics (macro lenses), lighting (ring flashes) and digital data recording, while dentistry has gained tools to improve diagnostics, medical records and communication with patients, as well as facilitating the exchange of experience among professionals. Aim of the study. To present the potential of contemporary digital photography to dentists – and in particular to orthodontists – on the basis of literature review and history of dental photography development, and to discuss photography standards: equipment parameters and photographic techniques. Concusion. Digital clinical photography has a wide range of applications in present orthodontic practice, including proper case documentation, improved communication with patients and dental professionals around the world. Appropriate equipment and knowledge of clinical photography standards are two essential pillars of every modern orthodontic practice.
