PHRASEOLOGISMS AS LANGUAGE UNITS IN THE SPEECH OF AMERICAN POLITICIANS AND FACTORS INFLUENCE ON CHOICE OF THEM

Abstract

The article examines the relationship between language elements, in particular phraseological and idiomatic expressions, and factors that influence choice of them in specific speech situations. The author defines such concepts such as linguistic units and speech situation, and also indicates their relationship. The material used for the research is speeches of American politicians, C. Rice and Barack Obama. For conducting the research the following methods were selected: methods of analysis of scientific literature, generalization and systematization of scientific data, the method of consideration of linguistic resources within the text, semantic and stylistic method, comparative-stylistic method. As the basis for the article there were used the results of research of such authors as J. Austin, G. Clark, T. B. Carlson who studied the concept of "speech situation" and "speech act". The components that determine the speech situation and influence the choice of language units, studied by scholars such as John. Searle, John. Firth, D. Hymes, Jakobson. Summing up the results the author specify as the examples of factors influencing the choice of the studied speech units such as the historical experience of the country, conditions in which there is a speech interaction, the event that triggered this situation.
