Physical activity and cardiovascular risk profile in older community-dwelling women

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2012, Vol 28, Issue 3

Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases are the main reason of mortality in advanced age. There are relatively few studies exploring epidemiologic and prophylactic issues in the elderly. The aim of this study was to assess physical activity and its relationship to selected cardiovascular risk factors in older women aged 65 and more.A hundred forty-five community-dwelling women aged 72.1±5.23 years, residing in the city of Lodz (urban environment) participated in the study. Medical history was taken and physical examination was performed. BMI, WHR and the percentage of body fat were calculated. Total HDL and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and uric acid were measured. Physical activity was estimated based on the question asking about exercising for at least 30 minutes and using two physical activity questionnaires: Seven Day Physical Activity Recall Questionnaire (SDPAR) and Stanford.79.8% of physically inactive women were diagnosed with arterial hypertension as compared to 62.5% of women who declared exercising for at least 30 minutes (chi2=4.38; p=0.037). Significant statistical correlation was found between daily energy expenditure and HDL cholesterol (r=0.20; p=0.023) as well as between moderate physical activity level and systolic blood pressure (r=-0.18; p=0.031) and the number of regularly taking medications ( r=-0.24; p=0.004). Women with diagnosed ischemic heart disease (F=4.12; p=0.044) and after stroke (F=5.08; p=0.026) had lower than average physical activity level.Moderate physical activity is related to cardiovascular risk factors such as HDL cholesterol and systolic blood pressure in older women. Women with diagnosed ischemic heart disease and after stroke were characterised by lower physical activity level as compared to their healthy peers.
