PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND TOTAL ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY OF HUMAN SERUM

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2006, Vol 22, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of human serum and level of physical activity.Material and methods. The research was carried out in the group of 120 men aged 34-89 years divided into 3 groups depending on number of calories expended for leisure time physical activity per week: A (= 300 i 2000 kcal • week-1). TAC was estimated by using spectrophotometric FRAP method (Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma) based on reduction of ferric ions to ferrous ions in the presence of antioxidants contained in human serum. Physical activity was also evaluated by Stanford Questionnaire.Results. There was no difference in mean (±SD) age (57,6±10,8 year; 63,1±9,8 year; 58,0±11,1 year, respectively for group A, B and C), height, body mass and moderate Stanford index in all three groups (p>0,05). The mean body mass index was statistically higher in group A than in group B and C (p=0,0013), whereas intensive Stanford index was statistically lower in group A than in group B and C (p
