Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2014, Vol 20, Issue 2

Abstract

The aim of the study was to find the level of physical activity and fitness declared by the students of the State Higher Vocational School in Biała Podlaska, Poland, as well as their free time and the time spent sitting, and also to determine the relationship between the findings and the gender of the respondents. The diagnostic survey method was used with the basic tool of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) (short version), extended with two questions concerning the scope of free time and self-reported physical fitness. Statistical analysis was performed using the STATISTICA 7.1 software programme. For detecting relationships, the U Mann-Whitney and Pearson Chi-Square were used. The study comprised 450 students – 237 females and 213 males, aged 18–26. It was found that the total level of physical activity amounted to 2359.5 MET-min./week, and was higher among males (2605.8 MET-min./week) than females (12129 MET-min./week). The dominant physical activity was walking (959.2 MET-min./week). Males attained higher values of intensive and moderate effort, whereas the females a little higher in walking. Statistically significant differences to the benefit of males were found in relation to total, intensive and moderate physical activity; high level of physical fitness; and sufficient amount of leisure time. Statistically significant differences were noted with regard to the level of moderate and low physical activity; an insufficient amount of free time, or even its lack. The students also declared that during one work day they spend 329 minutes sitting, the males a slightly longer time than females.
