Physical therapy in severe cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome – case presentation, management

Journal Title: Fizjoterapia Polska - Year 2018, Vol 18, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an acute neuropathy with an incidence ranging from 0.6 to 2.2 cases per 100,000. The aetiology of GBS has not yet been explained. 20% of GBS patients do not fully recover. Material. The paper presents the clinical picture observed in two men with particularly severe GBS and the physical therapy and rehabilitation conducted in these patients. Results. The patients were discharged from the Department of Rehabilitation after 6 and 18 months of treatment, respectively, and returned to work. Conclusions. 1. Even though the course of GBS can sometimes be very severe, full recovery is possible. 2. Intensive physical therapy and rehabilitation should be conducted from the onset of the disorder, even if no improvement occurs over several months.
