PHYTOBIOLOGICAL TESTING OF SOME BIOACTIVE COMPLEXES EXTRACTED FROM SCIRPOIDES HOLOSCHOENUS (L.) SOJÁK AND HELICHRYSUM ARENARIUM (L.) MOENCH

Abstract

Extracts of Scirpoides holoschoenus (L.) Sojak and Helichrysum arenarium (L.) Moench and the derived food supplements formulations (capsules) were tested on Triticum aestivum L. (wheat) caryopses in order to obtain preliminary data on the biological action (support of liver function) of the previously mentioned extracts and formulations obtained in the laboratory phase. In this purpose, treatments with several dilution of the fluid and dried extracts, and food supplement formulations (based on the dried extracts in different proportions) respectively, were applied. Firstly, the extracts and formulations were phytochemically analyzed in order to evaluate the bioactive compounds content and composition. The parameters determined within the phytobiological tests were: caryopses germination ratio, plant growth (roots and stems length), biomass accumulation (roots and stems fresh and dry weight, fresh to dry weight ratio). The germination test of wheat caryopses treated the experimental variants (extracts and formulations) did not reveal cytotoxic effects, at least in the early stages of T. aestivum ontogenesis. None of the experimental variants showed a negative influence on the physiological processes in wheat plants, thus providing some insights into the evaluation of cytotoxicity, important aspect in establishing the administration doses. The absence of cytotoxic effects suggests their safety on administration for their possible use in phytotherapy.
