Phytochemical investigation and acute toxicity study of Methanol extract of Bambusa vulgaris leaves

Journal Title: Journal of Pharmacy Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 2

Abstract

The present study was undertaken to investigate the phytoconstituents present in methanol extract of Bambusa vulgaris leaves and to evaluate the acute oral toxicity of leaf extract on swiss albino mice by acute toxic class method. The extract was administered orally at dose of 5mg,50mg, 300mg, 2000mg kg/body weight and the animals were observed individually after dosing for toxic effects. Phytochemical screening of leaf extract of Bambusa vulgaris revealed the presence of carbohydrate, glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, phytosterols and triterpenoids. The extract was found to be safe till 2000mg/kg oral dose. No lethality or adverse toxic signs were seen during the experimental period and during 14 days observation period. No delayed toxic signs were noted in experimental groups. These findings suggest that the methanol extract of Bambusa vulgaris could be relatively safe when administered orally in mice.
