PLACE OF CATEGORIES „OWN” AND „ALIEN” IN THE IMAGE OF MODERN SLAVS’ ANCESTORS IN RUSSIAN AND POLISH LITERATURE OF THE 19TH CENTURY
Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 18
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to study peculiarities of the Slavic world picture in historical literary works by V. Narezhny, Z. Volkonskaya, J. Slowacki and J. Krashewsky. Special attention is paid to the changes in the understanding of the category „own” as being appropriate to the collective spirit of traditional values and „alien” as being foreign and for this reason dangerous. Comparative methodology allows us to study the opposition „own – alien” at different levels. It plays the central role in the description of relations between different tribes (Slavs and Pechenegi, Slavs and Germans, etc.), in the disclosure of ethic relations, in the artistic cognition of the initial process of being unified with other Slavic peoples’ religion. There was traced a relationship between ”The Legend about Olga” by Z. Volkonskaya, on the one side, and „The Old Legend” by J. Krashewsky and „Lilla Weneda” by J. Slowacki as the links of the two cycles of works about the history of Poland from ancient times till the 19th century, on the other side. A point of view is proposed that J. Slowacki and J. Krashewsky relied on the same mythological and legend sources, that both of them showed tragic consequences of the lack of unity, and focused on the opposition „Slavs – people of other tribes”. The author of this article believes that the character distinction of princesses from the Scandinavian countries is explained by the distinction in historical opinions. So, Z. Volkonskaya followed a „Norman” theory that the first Russian princess was from Scandinavia. Olga cared for peace with Kyiv Slavs. J. Slowacki, as well as the Polish historian J. Lelewel, considered that Lexi (Lechi) were not Slavic tribes. So Gwinona in „Lilla Weneda” aspires to the elimination of the Weneds (Slavs). Results. The exposure of symmetry and asymmetry at the motive level and system of personages in the studied works allows us to judge the authorial conception of the national history. The practical value of the paper is connected with the comparative investigation of Romantic Slavic literatures.
