PLAGIARISM – The Death of Creativity in Science
Journal Title: IDA Ludhiana's Journal - Le Dentistry - Year 2018, Vol 2, Issue 1
Abstract
Plagiarism is a word of the early 17th century derived from the Latin word “plagiarius” (‘kidnapper’: from plagium ‘a kidnapping’).1 The Wikipedia definition of “plagiarism” is the "wrongful appropriation" and "stealing and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions" and the representation of them as one's own original work.2 In simple words, copying and pasting of material from someone else’s already published work and publishing them into your own scientific contribution without giving due credit to the one whose idea it was is considered as plagiarism. What happens is usually a series of events that makes plagiarism a serious matter in cases of scientific content and its authenticity. Imagine you copy from someone else’s work and it goes unnoticed and gets published as yours, the same is repeated by authors’ round the globe and finally one day when you are reading someone else’s work and find your work published as theirs. One feels bad, right? Plagiarism, hence, is considered more than legal, a moral issue which needs to be dealt in unison among scientists worldwide. As it is a common saying, if you give respect, you gain respect. Similarly, if you give respect to someone else’s work, one day you will earn respect. Somehow, in our education system, plagiarism does take a backseat. Not much importance is given to avoid and keep a check on this issue. We can write only what we read and that is agreeable. But what is wanted in science is that your interpretations should be reflected in your study that one has learned from the other studies. And that is what is referencing. Referencing is the art of giving credit to the person who actually gave you the thought process that one applied in his study. Not what is his thought process. This difference if understood will help us to raise the level of education and publication standards of Indian scientists worldwide.
