Plant protection in integrated oilseed rape production

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2009, Vol 30, Issue 2

Abstract

The integrated plant protection is the best way of assuring good condition of plants in the present economic situation and is leading to high quality of the crop without any negative influence on the natural environment. This protection system will be recommended in all countries in the UE in the near future. In this study the main rules of the integrated protection system utilised in the cultivation of rape are presented. Its basic purpose is maximum limitation of the application of chemical products, for alternative, natural methods. Non-chemical methods of limiting the occurrence of pests among the oilseed rape (fungi, weeds and pests) play significant role in the integrated systems. The choice of a variety, which has high resistance to infection with pathogens, using the healthy, qualified and dressed sowing material as well as the way of the cultivation and the sequence of agrotechnological treatments, are important in the integrated protection of oilseed rape. However, balanced fertilizing and applying plant protection products with the highest effectiveness and applying the lowest possible dose is also essential. The decision about applying the chemical protection should be based on the excellent knowledge of biology and ecology of main pests appearing in the rape considering thresholds of harmfulness. As far as possible, this method should be based on recommendations of decision support system. Chemical products applied in the system of the integrated production should not belong to the group of toxic for people and the environment. In the integrated method, it is necessary to apply biological methods of limiting harmful organisms if there is such possibility.Setting about fungi control, the maker of the main danger and the possibility of appearing at the same time of different fungi should be determined to make choice of the fungicidal product, containing active ingredients, which enable total control over the health of the plants. The choice of the product should be connected with the phase of the growth of the rape and agroclimate conditions. In this method it is also essential to use principles of the antiresistance strategy, in the case of applying a several treatments.A morphological knowledge and an image of the losses evoked by them are important in the pests control. Using prehensile dishes, glue traps and different devices enabling precise monitoring of the increase of the appearance of pests in the rapeseed plantation is also important. In insect control such active ingredients should be used which will not have influence on useful fauna of insects existing in this crop.Weeds control in the integrated production of the oilseed rape is difficult. It is mainly connected with narrow row span. This type of sowing makes difficult to perform mechanical treatments. However, a competent application of herbicides allows to make treatments with lower doses and getting the full effectiveness. Application time of product should be taken into consideration, especially for winter oilseed rape, whose protection period should begin with sowing and should be continued during the autumn. A limiting factor to herbicide doses is the application of mixtures together with adiuvants. Moreover, competent applying of herbicides eliminate such phenomena in plant protection as compensation for weeds and immunizing.Complying with all recommendations of good practice of plant protection against the pests has significant influence on the final effect obtained during running the integrated production of the oilseed rape.
