Abstract
With the development of the feminist movement, the problematics of femininity and masculinity has become an object of scholar’s scientific interests. Masculinity has been thoroughly studied in the late 80's – 90's of the XX century. The urgent need of the society to eliminate the social subordination motivated modern researchers to move away from the stereotype of the noted concept, which implies domination of men and subordination of women. Instead, they propose to expand and complement the concept of masculinity. In the process of researching the concept of masculinities based on the novel ''Beloved'' by Toni Morrison the author of the article uses works of the prominent foreign scholars, such as John Beynon, Raewyn Connell, Tim Edwards, Nancy Kang and Polk Kenneth. The scientists perform various aspects of masculinities and give this notion a new sense, which differ from the stereotypical one. For demonstrating that Toni Morrison’s protagonists from her novel 'Beloved' were taken as bright examples. Her male and female characters combine both feminine and masculine qualities and manifest them in different ways depending on social background. Besides, the role of racial and gender distinctive features is underlined. As a result, those who demonstrate masculine features provoke others to extraordinary actions that lead to the changes in the inner world of both. Thus, pluralism of manifestation of the characters’ masculine qualities of this novel depends on the objective and subjective social factors. It leads to conclusion that Toni Morrison rejects stereotypical notions of masculinities, calling for the humanization of society by means of formation of unbiased relationships.
