Polymorphism analysis of FGFR3 gene in Suffolk sheep
Journal Title: Journal of Animal Science, Biology and Bioeconomy - Year 2015, Vol 33, Issue 1
Abstract
Spider lamb syndrome (SLS) or hereditary chondrodysplasia is associated with abnormal development of the musculoskeletal system in sheep. This monogenic disease is caused by an autosomal recessive allele in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene. The aim of the study was to determine the presence of g.1719T>A substitution in the FGFR3 gene, which in the homozygous configuration causes chondrodysplasia in Suffolk, Hampshire, Shropshire and Oxford sheep. The results of the study with 240 Suffolk sheep show that no allele is responsible for SLS. Considering the size of the analysed population, it is concluded that the probability of animals carrying the FGFR3SLS/ recessive allele in the national Suffolk population is very low.
