Polyphenols as potential therapeutical agents against cardiovascular diseases.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2005, Vol 57, Issue
Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests that polyphenols from fruits, vegetables and beverages such as wine and tea may exert protective effects on the cardiovascular system. Indeed, research in the field of polyphenols points out their antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties, leading to lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation and platelet aggregation. These compounds are also ableto modulate the generation of nitric oxide (NO) from vascular endothelium and to interfere with the mechanisms leading to inflammation and endothelial apoptosis, contributing to the prevention of the endothelial dysfunction, known to play a central role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. This article reviews the potential targets of polyphenols involved in the complex pathophysiological events occurring in cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, atherosclerosis and stroke.

Methamphetamine-induced neurotoxicity: the road to Parkinson's disease.
Studies have implicated methamphetamine exposure as a contributor to the development of Parkinson's disease. There is a significant degree of striatal dopamine depletion produced by methamphetamine, which makes the toxin...
Evaluation of terfenadine and ketoconazole-induced QT prolongation in conscious telemetered guinea pigs.
Terfenadine and ketoconazole are the most widely used positive reference agents in non-clinical cardiac repolarization safety studies. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of terfenadine, ketoconazole...
Estrogen-induced relaxation of the rat tail artery is attenuated in rats with pulmonary hypertension.
The mechanisms involved in the effects of estrogen on arterial smooth muscle contractility are very complex and not fully clarified. Therefore, the aim of this paper was to examine the mechanisms of estrogen-induced rela...
Mechanisms of platelet-activating factor (PAF)-mediated responses in the lung.
Platelet-activating factor (PAF) is a potent lipid mediator that has been implicated in asthma, sepsis, acute lung injury and ischemia/reperfusion injury. Its actions in the lungs include vasoconstriction, bronchoconstri...
Effects of 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) on histomorphometric parameters of the rat bones.
6-Mercaptopurine (6-MP) is an antimetabolite. The drug inhibits DNAsynthesis of cells by acting as a false analog of purines. 6-MP displays a cytostatic and immunosuppressive activity. The studies carried out so far focu...
