Polyphenols as potential therapeutical agents against cardiovascular diseases.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2005, Vol 57, Issue
Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests that polyphenols from fruits, vegetables and beverages such as wine and tea may exert protective effects on the cardiovascular system. Indeed, research in the field of polyphenols points out their antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties, leading to lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation and platelet aggregation. These compounds are also ableto modulate the generation of nitric oxide (NO) from vascular endothelium and to interfere with the mechanisms leading to inflammation and endothelial apoptosis, contributing to the prevention of the endothelial dysfunction, known to play a central role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. This article reviews the potential targets of polyphenols involved in the complex pathophysiological events occurring in cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, atherosclerosis and stroke.

Influence of fluvastatin on bone formation induced by demineralized bone matrix in mice.
In the last decade, statins became widely used drugs in hypercholesterolemia treatment. Several studies have demonstrated that statins may also be successfully administered in the treatment of osteoporosis. There are, ho...
Effects of morphine on immediate-early gene expression in the striatum of C57BL/6J and DBA/2J mice.
Background: Immediate early gene (IEG) induction elicited by drugs of abuse may contribute to development of plastic changes in the brain responsible for drug-induced behavioral changes leading to addiction. The aim of t...
Study of the interaction of glutamatergic and nitrergic signalling in conditions of the experimental airways hyperreactivity.
Background: Glutamatergic and nitrergic system participate in the control of respiratory system functions. It is only little information regarding a possible interaction of both systems in the airways hyperractivity. We...
Effects of etoricoxib on the pharmacokinetics of phenytoin.
Etoricoxib is presently the most commonly prescribed cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) inhibitor for chronic pain and inflammatory conditions. In clinical practice, phenytoin and etoricoxib are used in chronic conditions of gener...
Naturally appearing N-feruloylserotonin isomers suppress oxidative burst of human neutrophils at the protein kinase C level.
N-feruloylserotonin (N-f-5HT) isomers, isolated from seeds of Leuzea carthamoides (Wild) DC, inhibited dose-dependent oxidative burst in human whole blood and isolated neutrophils in vitro, which were measured by luminol...
