Portrait characteristics of the main hero in the novel “Buddenbrooks” by Tomas Mann

Abstract

The article deals with the adjectives as means of the language formation and peculiarities of their function in the novel by Thomas Mann “Buddenbrooks”. It emphasizes the crucial importance of a detailed description of the heroes appearance. It is noted that the novel adjectives indicate the person’s appearance and his social status. The article was aimed at investigating the stylistic language means, frequency of their usage and their function peculiarities in the text. The ways of realization of the adjectives' semantic shades while creating the exterior portrait, as well as emotional and expressive effects have been investigated. It has been found out that the main patterns and tendencies of the author's style are being reflected in the adjectival lexical units' selection, in the high frequency of their usage, and in their style functions.
