Journal Title: The Journal of Happiness and Well-Being - Year 2015, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
In this study, Positive Psychotherapy, resource oriented and transcultural therapeutic approach, has been introduced to Turkish literature and the applicability of it to Turkish culture has been discussed. The contents of the study includes the introduction, the historical development, the basic principles and methods, and the applicability of positive psychotherapy to Turkish culture. Positive psychotherapy is a humanistic, psychodynamic, resource oriented, conflict-centered approach that is explicitly integrative and transcultural. An important element of positive psychotherapy is the focus on the ‘positive’, which means ‘given and ‘actual’ in the original form of Latin word ‘positum’. Positive psychotherapy follows a five-step process with clear psycho-educational features: 1. Observation, 2. Inventory, 3. Situational encouragement, 4. Verbalization, 5. Broadening of the goals. This process gives structure to the therapy and also can be learned by clients and applied in their own living situations so that they can use it for self-help when the process ends. Turkey is known to be a collectivist culture which contains various cultural orientations, life styles, religious background, and ethnic identity As a result it can be concluded that positive psychotherapy could be applicable to Turkish culture especially because of its integrative approach and emphasis on cross-cultural therapy. Nevertheless some concerns should be noted. The paper suggests potential directions.
