POSSIBILITIES OF APPLICATION OF NEW MATERIALS FOR CHAIN DRUMS OF ARMOURED FACE CONVEYORS WITH AN INCREASED WEAR RESISTANCE

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2013, Vol 247, Issue 1

Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to carry out comparative research concerning the wear properties of materials used for chain drums, both of domestic and foreign production, as well as of ADI cast iron, which was considered as a material highly suitable for use in manufacture of drums. As part of the study, a new test rig was developed and made in order to allow testing the process of wear in the presence of an additional abrasive material. On the basis of the experimental research concerning the wear properties, it has been found that the highest wear resistance among the analysed materials had the nodular cast iron containing approximately 1% of Cu and subjected to isothermal quenching in salts at a temperature of 270±5°C (variant: ADI CU C). It should be emphasized that each of the considered variants of ADI cast iron was characterized by a wear resistance better than that of steels and cast steels that are already in use or very similar. In terms of quality, the results were similar to the results of the research on abrasive wear of the ADI cast irons and steels presented by other authors in their research.
