POSSIBILITIES OF DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSIT THROUGH THE PORTS OF GDANSK AND GDYNIA

Abstract

The development of international transit traffic through Polish sea ports is one of the main objectives of Polish transport policy, as far as the sea transport and the cooperating with it land transport system are concerned. In the action programme, adopted in /995 by the Polish Government, contained in the Transport Policy document, which aims at transforming Polish transport into a system well fitted to the requirements of market economy and to the new conditions of cooperation in Europe, it is pointed out that one of the priorities of Polish transport policy in the international sphere should be the development of transport cooperation of Poland with countries of Central and East Europe, in that active marketing for transit cargo from these countries by means of generating advantageous technical, economical and organisational conditions for servicing that cargo along the whole route through Polish territory. The paper presents problems connected with the directions of activation of the Gdansk and Gdynia ports in the service of cargo coming from the international hinterland of these ports, which encompasses the Central and East European countries.
