POST-PUNK FROM GENDER PERSPECTIVE: "PIN UP CASE"

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2014, Vol 7, Issue 35

Abstract

The main stream rock music has opened its opposition to questioning as a result of its collaboration with capitalism; and as a sub-culture of androcentric rock music, punk has been a significant style in which counter cultural activism has reached to its peak. They opposed everything. In short, they were accused of being anarchist. However, those who put that blame on them were the supporters of the system. In this respect, instead of blaming them at once, we will try to clarify the phenomenon “punk”, taking the principle of Cultural Studies claiming that “Things which people value are meaningful for them” as our guide. However, the ultimate goal is to understand punk rock in the framework of gender via the experience of a “girls” punk band, namely Pin-Up, the pioneering figure of this study. The data was obtained through observation and interview techniques. The study focuses on the personal and cultural identities of the group and the group members, and attemps to understand how their habitus related to this identity influences their music. Meanwhile, we will try not to ignore “hegemony” process in this respect, bearing in mind that identity is a contextual, transformable and negotiable concept.
