Postać Emmy Altberg (1889–1983) w świetle zachowanej korespondencji. Przyczynek do biografii łódzkiej klawesynistki

Journal Title: Notes Muzyczny - Year 2016, Vol 2, Issue 6

Abstract

Emma Altberg, a pianist, reviewer and editor of collections of teaching works for piano (e.g. Music Reading Materials, Selection of Works from the 17th and 18th Centuries), was a teacher at the State Higher School of Music in Łódź, where she founded and ran the class of harpsichord. The basis of her teaching work were the principles included in the theses by the 18th century theoreticians and she was one of Poland’s forerunners of period-style performance of early music. Despite her enormous contribution to promoting the knowledge about the right interpretation of works by old masters, Altberg did not gain recognition among music authorities of that time and her academic achievements were soon forgotten. The article is an attempt to present the artistic and teaching activity of this harpsichordist from Łódź in the light of her correspondence with her student Bogdan Przedecki (1926– 2014). The unpublished letters, which were handed to Professor Ewa Piasecka in 2008, include Altbers’s interesting remarks referring to the interpretation of early music and present her original methods of working with students. The article author also used other archival materials: letters of the harpsichordist’s sister Maria Arnoldowa (1893–1995), student Barbara Strzelecka (born 1928), and other documents deposited in the Archives of the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź.
