POSTMODERN PROJECTIONS OF AN ARCHAIC RITUAL: FROM POTLACH TRADITION TO CONSUMPTION CULTURE

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 52

Abstract

One of the most important sources for describing social events from the early period sociologists to the day-to-day was anthropological data because sociology, which acted with the aim of building and maintaining modern society better, thought that it could reach its goal by reaching its original formations of social structure. When a person born in a certain society's traditions and customs joins the 'Ben' built by the mold of the society inhabited, the consumption culture in the postmodern era emerges as an important element in this construction process. In today's postmodern era, contemporary man has positioned consumption as an essential element of his life in order to obtain a social status. The traces of customs lost in 'myself' 'ourself' such as unrequited giving, self-sacrifice for the continuity of the society, giving gifts, catering to invitations at certain ceremonies, and money at weddings can be traced to the tradition of potlach in archaic societies. This condition, which is also fed by irrational behavior patterns, continues to exist in various forms in society we live in. Based on this context, in our communiqué, traces of daily tradition of potlach tradition were followed from archaic societies, examples of potlach were mentioned in Turkish society, modern looting and potlach were mentioned, and the focus was on postmodern potlach onsumption and potlach relation.
