Posture and power of quorums muscles of young volleyball players

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2012, Vol 28, Issue 1

Abstract

The aim of this study was to undertake to determine the relationship between the strength of selected postural muscles and some body posture parameters in the sagittal plane36 boys aged 15-16 years, involved in volleyball were studied. The study was conducted in 2008. The study group was divided into two subgroups: below the median chronological age (15.9 years) and above. Measurements of muscle torques in static conditions was performed in standard positions. Body posture was assessed using Mory photogrammetric techniques.Smaller value of torques was registered in the group of younger players (<15.9 years) compared to older players, they also had higher prevalence of body posture abnormalities. Analysis of simple Pearson correlation coefficients showed that relationships between the strength of postural muscles and selected body posture parameters were not the same in the studied age groups. It was noted that there was a significant relationship between the angle α and the values of the sum of torques at the hips, especially in the left, among the older players. Significant correlation between lumbar spine inclination (angle α) and the value of lordosis (LL angle) and the strength of the hip joint and trunk extensors was showed in the group of younger volleyball players. The strength of trunk flexors in this group significantly correlated with the size of the angle γ (angle of inclination of the path connecting C7 with the peak of the vertical thoracic kyphosis). There was a higher prevalence of excessive increase of thoracic kyphosis among younger players compared with the older ones. Results of this study indicate interrelations between strength of selected postural muscles and the body posture parameters. However, these relationships are not unequivocal in experimental both groups, indicating a need for further research studies and analysis covering a much larger group.
