Potential Benefits and Challenges of mRNA Cancer Vaccines
Journal Title: Journal of Clinical Immunology & Microbiology - Year 2023, Vol 4, Issue 3
Abstract
Cancer is a complex and multifaceted disease that affects millions of people worldwide. One of the most promising advances in cancer treatment and prevention is the development of mRNA cancer vaccines. These vaccines are designed to harness the power of the immune system to target and eliminate cancer cells, offering a revolutionary approach to cancer therapy. Recently, one mRNA vaccine (mRNA-4157/v940) received FDA approval to be used as an adjuvant with Pembrolizumab therapy in melanoma patients. In addition, several mRNA cancer vaccines are in the development stage as follows: BNT111: BioNTech’s personalized mRNA vaccine for melanoma, has shown promising results in clinical trials. MEDI1843: Moderna’s personalized mRNA vaccine for melanoma, which is also in clinical trials. ZYN001: CureVac’s mRNA vaccine for pancreatic cancer, which is in Phase II clinical trials. INO-5401: Inovio’s mRNA vaccine for cervical cancer, which is in Phase II clinical trials.
