POTENTIAL USE OF MUCIN AS BIOMARKER FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF BREAST CANCER
Journal Title: WORLD JOURNAL PHARMACY AND PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
Background and Aim: Breast cancer is considered the leading cause of cancer death among females in developing countries. Tumor markers are biochemical indicators for the presence of tumor. Aim of study to identify, quantity and evaluate of mucin-1 for diagnosis breast cancer. Methods: Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, western blotting and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were used for identifying mucin-1 in sera of women with breast cancer (n= 88) and healthy women (n= 32). Results: MUC1 was identified at 130 kDa. The mean level of serum mucin-1 in women with breast cancer was higher than (5.60 ± 0.68 μg/ml) in the healthy women (1.32 ± 0.16 μg/ml) with extremely high significant difference (p < 0.0001). There was significant correlation between age and Mucin-1 in women with breast cancer (r = 0.40; p <0.0001). MUC1 showed high diagnostic performance with area under receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC = 0. 91), sensitivity 75.0%, specificity 93.8%, PPV 97.1% NPV 57.7% and efficiency 80.0 %. Conclusion: It was showed that MUC1 may help in diagnosis of breast cancer and can be used in follow up of treatment.
