Abstract

One of the concepts that have changed in modern philosophical thought is science. Formerly, science, which expresses the exertion for comprehending the transendent principle of meaningful cosmos, has begun to be seen as a non-metaphysical activity of mind that is able to fully conceptualize and theorize the whole truth, with the new age. Mentioned change brought the problem of how knowledge could be saved from unproven metaphysical propositions, and opened up the objectivity of science to debate. In this sense, while the positivist approach based on fundamental empiricism came forward and reached it’s final point with logical positivism, the verification principle became the first criterion of objectivity of science. Karl Popper, the philosopher of science, found the validation principle inadequate and presented the principle of falsification as an alternative measure of objectivity. Our work aims to reveal the ideal of modern science to purify knowledge from metaphysics by taking the historical process into consideration. Our work, first focuses on the verification principle of logical positivists and then on Popper’s principle of falsification, suggests that modern science has to restrict its own sphere of existence in order to purify knowledge from metaphysics.
