Prehypertension among medical students: The prevalence and risk factors

Journal Title: International Journal Of Research In Medicine - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 4

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The problem of hypertension is growing very rapidly in India with a prevalence of nearly 30% from a very recent systematic review. Prehypertension, the preceding reversible stage, defined as systolic blood pressure of 120-139mmHg and/or diastolic pressure between 80-89 mmHg. This survey was done to identify prehypertensive burden and risk factors among a target population of medical students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross sectional study done among medical students of a medical college in Andhra Pradesh, India over a six months on a sample size of 300. A pretested and preformed questionnaire, sphygmomanometer, weighing machine, stethoscope were the different study tools used for the study. Blood pressure was recorded in the sitting position in the right arm using the mercury sphygmomanometer. RESULTS: A total of 300 students participated in the study and the overall prevalence of prehypertension was 45%. Prehypertension was 1.5 times more in people consuming fast food, 1.3 times more with family history of hypertension and 1.45 times more in people with family history of diabetes. Pre hypertension was 1.45 times more in smokers and 1.75 times more in alcohol consumers and was statistically highly significant. CONCLUSION: It is recommended that students have to increase their physical exercise to at least three times a week and to reduce consumption of soft drinks, pickles especially in southern part of India as they have high salt content. There is a need to improve the curriculum regarding nutritional intake and its impact on body weight and health.
