Preliminary study on the properties of lightweight particleboard made using polystyrene

Abstract

Preliminary study on the properties of lightweight particleboards made using polystyrene. Production of light materials of panels currently is an actual trend. Light panels assure high ratio of weight to strength and significantly decreases the cost of wood raw material. In this study, lightweight particleboard were produced with the thickness of 18 mm, density 300-550kg/m3 at different pressing temperatures (200 °C and 220 °C) and time of (252 s and 372 s). External layers of panels were shelled with veneer of birch and core layers have middle layer type of chips and granules of polystyrene. The ratio of polystyrene in panels is 7%. Urea formaldehyde resin with the addition of paraffin emulsion and hardener ammonium nitrate was used as the binder. The lightweight particleboard was tested on tensile strength perpendicular to the plane (IB) and modulus of rupture (MOR). The increase of temperature pressing and time of pressing was determined that they have negative effects on the ultimate strength of plates during static bending. And with increasing density lightweight particleboard the amplified has negative effect. The tensile strength perpendicular to the plane (IB) increases, with increasing temperature and time of pressing. The increase temperature and time pressing of lightweight particleboards made using polystyrene, as the results show, is not effective. Keywords:
