Premature termination of group psychotherapy — main characteristics and recommendations for reducing it

Journal Title: Psychoterapia - Year 2010, Vol 153, Issue 2

Abstract

This paper is a review of current theoretical and practical knowledge concerning the phenomenon of dropping-out of group psychotherapy for adults — a part of research on psychotherapy efficiency. The theoretical part focuses on definition, the scale of the issue, negative and potential positive consequences, complex reasons. The clinical practice section contains selected recommendations for reducing risk of premature termination and samples of psychotherapeutic interventions when: a) there are the signals, b) attrition is unavoidable. The subject is described mainly from the patient perspective. The study is addressed to professionals involved in providing group psychotherapy treatment.
