Preparation of biodiesel from waste restaurant grease by acid catalyzed two-step raising temperature process

Abstract

The recovered waste restaurant grease is pretreated and use as feedstock for preparation of biodiesel by transesterification with methanol catalyzed by H2SO4 in a two-step raising temperature process. The effects of reaction parameters are observed and the optimized reaction conditions are obtained as follows: catalyst loading 5% volume of grease, molar ratio of methanol to grease 20:1, reaction temperature 150℃, and reaction time 2.5 hours. The yield of biodiesel reachs 93% in the optimized conditions. The quality of prepared biodiesel matchs the ASTM PS121–99 standard.
