PREPARATION OF SECONDARY SCHOOL GRADUATES FOR THE EIKA IN MATHEMATICS

Abstract

There are two forms of nation-wide standardized assessment in mathematics in Ukraine – The External Inde-pendent Knowledge Assessment (EIKA) and The State Final Examination (SFE). Preparing for the SFE is incorpo-rated in existing programs / curricula in Mathematics and textbooks; the corresponding assignments being known to teachers, therefore, teachers generally do not have problems in this area. The EIKA tests in Mathematics are not known beforehand, they are elaborated by a separate department of the MES of Ukraine (Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment – UCEQA). In addition, there is no single nation-wide training program for EIKA, that is why the guidelines relating to the organization and content of the training are sure to be relevant. The aim of the article is to describe the key regulations of the author's model enabling the preparation for the EIKA in Mathematics on the basis of the gained experience. The essence of the proposed training for the EIKA system is realized by means of implemention of these didactic principles: 1) division of theoretical material into 10 logically interconnected thematic clusters, which enables revision of the previous material while studying further material; 2) representation of the necessary theoretical material only in textbooks, the material being presented in a clear form with corresponding explanations; 3) representation (in textbooks and collections of test assignments) of all the forms contained in the Independent Knowledge Assessment Tests alongside with other forms which are popular in the world testological practice and are likely to be used in Ukraine in the nearest future; 4) representation of training tasks to each unit according to the principle “from simple to complex”; 5) placement of training test items in pairs, the first item is to be solved with a teacher and the second one - for independent solving; 6) communication with pupils being trained at testing courses in the «fun math» style; 7) conduction of thematic and final combined tests enabling systematization of the thematic material and particular corrections within the process of preparation. For effective implementation of these principles we use a methodical kit which consists of the manual containing theoretical material, a supplementary collection of training test assignments and a textbook containing a collection of combined tests. All the constituents of the teaching kit are written on the basis of common regulations, have the same thematic and logical structure thus ensuring the quality of high school students’ training in Mathematics for the EIKA.
