Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Cryptosporidiosis Infections in Some Swine Farms in Debre Zeit, Ethiopia

Journal Title: Journal of Veterinary Advances - Year 2015, Vol 5, Issue 6

Abstract

The present investigation was undertaken to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of Cryptosporidium infection in different age groups of domestic pigs (piglets, weaners and adult pigs) in Debre Zeit, Ethiopia between November (2013) to April (2014). A total of 384 pig fecal samples were collected from piglet (120), weaner (136), and adult (128) in 4 farms located in Debre Zeit. The Sheather centrifugal flotation methods followed by Modified Ziehl Neelsen staining technique were used for the detection of Cryptosporidium parasite. Among them, 9.9% (38/384) fecal samples were positive for Cryptosporidium parasites. Based on age, piglets were found to have the highest prevalence share. A prevalence of 21.67% (26/120), 7.35% (10/136), 1.56% (2/128) was recorded for piglets, weaner pigs and adults, respectively. Statistically significant differences (P<0.05) among age, farm type, mixing with other animals, but not sex of the pigs. As conclusion, cryptosporidiosis caused a significant loss in the studied farms, which require further investigation to identify the prevailing Cryptosporidium species in pigs as well as other domestic animals using molecular techniques.
