Prevalence and factors associated with smoking among people infected with HIV in Burkina Faso

Abstract
Introduction. Smoking is a public health problem, but it is more of a concern for people living with HIV. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with smoking in these patients. Method and patients. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study that took place at the Yalgado Ouedraogo Hospital Day Hospital from October 1st, 2014 to March 31st, 2015. Included in this work were all people living with HIV who visited this center during this period. Results. A total of 2016 patients (551 men and 1518 women) were included in this study, a sex ratio of 0.36. The average age of our patients was 42.2 ± 9.6 years. Among these patients, the prevalence of smoking was 5.6%, of which 19.5% in male patients versus 0.5% in female patients. Of the tobacco users, 67% were current tobacco users and 33% were former consumers. The level of nicotine dependence was low with an average Fagerström score of 3.7. Among the factors associated with smoking were male sex (p <0.0001), age group 51-60 (p = 0.007), higher education level (p <0.0001), workers (p <0.0001), rural residence (p = 0.006) and patients living in couples (p = 0.013). Conclusion. This preliminary study reveals the reality of smoking among people living with HIV in Burkina Faso.
