Prevalence of Electrolyte Abnormalities in Emergency Patients
Journal Title: Journal of Medical Science And clinical Research - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
Fluid and electrolyte balance is the most important parameter that maintains the normal homeostasis in the body. It is also important for the normal functioning of the cells and maintenance of acid-base balance in the body. Electrolyte disturbances are commonly present in most of the clinical disorders, so its correction is needed in the management of these diseases. The present study was conducted on the patients admitted in the emergency department of Government Medical College, Jammu in which the serum electrolytes and serum urea and creatinine levels were estimated to observe the prevalence of electrolyte abnormalities in these patients. It was observed that the hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte imbalance present in our study. Thus in the management of the patients admitted in emergency, the estimation of renal function tests and electrolytes should be done. As fluid therapy is the most common line of management in these patients while treating them the electrolyte abnormalities should be taken into consideration and should be treated accordingly.
