Goitre is one of the important manifestations of iodine deficiency. Generally it is believed that coastal areas have lower prevalence of goitre. The present study was conducted to know the prevalence of goitre among school children in a coastal district, Kottayam of Kerala. Objectives: To study the prevalence of goitre among school children in the age group of 6-12 years in Kottayam and to assess the relation between goitre and various risk factors like family history, salt consumption etc. Methods: WHO recommended population proportionate to size (PPS) cluster sampling method for IDD survey was used to select the schools. A total of 600 children were selected from 10 schools. All children were examined for goitre and pretested questionnaire was used to collect socio demographic details. Data was entered in Excel and analysed using SPSS 16.0 Results: Overall prevalence of goitre (grade1& grade 2) was 9.8%. Girls were having higher prevalence than boys (12.9% v/s 6.7% p < 0.01). Family history of goitre and vegetarian diet were significantly associated with goitre. There was increasing trend of goitre prevalence with age (p <0.007). Conclusions: Iodine Deficiency Disorders are still a public health problem in coastal areas defying the belief that people consume lots of fish and have lower prevalence of goitre.
