Prevention is better than cure
Journal Title: Journal Of Pediatric Critical Care - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 6
Abstract
Advances in health care have also predisposed human beings to various threats. Health care associated or hospital acquired infections are important cause of morbidity and mortality in present set up of intensive care units (healthcare-associated infections are defi ned as infections that patients acquire while receiving treatment for other conditions within a healthcare setting).1 Such infections also put extra fi nancial burden on the hospital, family and insurance companies. There are various sources(treatment, irrational use of antibiotics, procedures, devices, colonization, environment, hospital staff) of infection in intensive care units.2 Still various institutions do not report such infections thus causing problem in framing hospital policies and guidelines. Children have greater risk as compared to adults and data is also not available in pediatric population. Ventilator associated pneumonia or ventilator associated events and central-line associated blood infections are most common occurrence.3 Various preventive measures including hand hygiene and protocol policies if adopted can decrease the morbidity and mortality related to infections. Quality of health care services of any ICU or hospital is also determined by knowing the occurrence of infection rate.4 Identifi cation of health care associated infections help in developing the policy and guidelines. Various organization like CDC, Society for Health Care Epidemiology of America, Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology have developed the guidelines and also assist the institutions in formulating the policies. In present addition of journal our team has tried to discuss some issues related to health care associated infections and their prevention.
