Primary Characteristics of The Pre-Miocene Dykes in Ghanima Area, Western Part of Al Khums District, (NW Libya)
Journal Title: Libyan Journal of Engineering Science and Technology - Year 2023, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
This work has been accomplished through field observations in conjunction with the information obtained from thin sections. Two samples was taken for petrographic analysis. These two dykes cut older rocks of Abu Shaybah and Sidi Assaid formations in Gaream valley, and Sidi Assiad formation in Ghanima valley. These Pre-Miocene dykes are named on this paper dyke (A) located in Gaream valley, and dyke (B) located in Ghanima valley in Ghanima area, north west of Libya. The mineral compostion of the two dykes generally composed of plagioclase, amphibole, little garnet and little pyroxene, in addition to obaque minerals. Porphoritic texture is obvious in the samples. Large crystals of plagioclase and amphibole occure in finer ground mass of similar minerals. Plagioclase feldspar phenocrystals are usually elongated. Amphibole crystals in large size appear as euhedral crystals. Most mafic minerals occure as amphibole and pyroxene. Garnet crystals exist as anhedral crystals where pyroxene appears as inclusions in amphibole phenocrystals as well as large seperated crystals. Olivine anhedral crystals exist as inclusions in plagioclase.
