Principal’s application of management by objective in schools in Nigeria

Abstract

The study examined principals’ application of management by objective in secondary schools’ administration in Ebonyi State. Six research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The study sample comprised 204 principals: 134 male and 70 female principals. Data collection was by means of a questionnaire titled application of Management by Objective Techniques in the Management of Secondary Schools (ABMOTMSS). Data collected were analyzed using mean (x) and standard deviation (SD) to answer the research questions while t-test statistics was used to test the hy- potheses at 0.05 alpha level. The findings showed that there was no significant difference in the mean ratings between the male and female principals in the application of management by objective in the secondary school administration. The findings also revealed that there was a significant difference between the mean ratings of urban and rural secondary school principals in favor of the urban principals in Ebonyi State. The study recommends that Secondary Education Board (SEB) should on regular basis organize work- shops and seminars for serving principals and vice-principals highlighting the place of MBO in school administration for the overall success of the school system.
