PRO ET CONTRA USE EMOTIONAL LANGUAGE IN ARGUMENTATION

Journal Title: Молодий вчений - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 46

Abstract

This article analyses two opposite positions of modern scientists of informal approach to legitimacy or non-legitimacy of the use of emotional language as an effective mean of persuasion in disputes and discussions and its role in argumentation theory – Canadian and pragma-dialectical schools of argumentation. Netherlands researchers describe emotive language as a deceptive strategy and rule out the possibility to use emotive expressions in relevant argument of critical discussion, because such reception as emotional language violates the valid way of critical discussion and can become a reason of crash of the strategic maneuvering. The scientists of Canadian school examine an argumentation in pragmatic mode, they prove efficiency and even necessity of emotive language and emphasize on its acceptability during persuasion process. New theoretical mechanism of including emotional language and its tools in critical discussion (on every stage) have already created by representatives of Canadian school. The article’s author defines one of the main reasons of ambiguous attitude to emotive language, namely difference of argumentative models in different approaches: from pragmatic vision of real argumentation by Canadian school to strict and idealized pragma-dialectical model of critical discussion. The author’s conclusion: emotive language can be legitimate mean of persuasion when it has verified facts and consistent understanding of the context by proponent and opponent and by speaker and audience as well.
