Problems of Rural Waste Management in the Northwest of Iran in 2017: Provision of a Suitable Model for Management with the Participation of Stakeholders

Journal Title: Journal of Health Research in Community - Year 2020, Vol 6, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction and purpose: The management of rural waste is one of the major environmental and health concerns and an important component in maintaining health. The aim of this study was to become aware of the status and problems of rural waste management and compare it to the past in Tabriz villages in the northwest of Iran during 2017. Methods: The condition of waste management in 20 villages with health houses and populations of over 500 individuals was analyzed through field visits, completion of the modified checklist of Hesam et al., interviews with village managers, and review of information from East Azerbaijan Health Center.   Results: All the surveyed villages had a specific trustee for waste management. All the components related to waste management were relatively improved, compared to the indicators reported for 2010. In this regard, the presence of a village manager (i.e., Dehyari) is completely effective. Waste collection is conducted in 20% and 25% of the villages twice and once a week at unspecified times, respectively. Therefore, the residents were forced to release the waste in the village leading to the dispersal of waste and environmental pollution. The status of separation from source and recycling was not favorable. There were many problems with animal waste management, especially in villages without a master plan. Conclusion: Although good progress has been achieved in the field of rural waste, due to the existing problems, training village managers in the field of waste management and educating individuals as one of the main stakeholders in waste segregation and compost and vermicompost production can solve these problems.
